Own a website currently? Or perhaps you’re looking to build one. OF course you need to plan properly to make sure things go as planned from the off. So we have put together a simple tick list to make sure you get your fresh new website off to the best start possible and results will be sure to come.
To begin with, prior to buying a domain name, there are some simple rules you must follow:
Keyword Research – The key to website success!
This is a very important step before purchasing a domain name; think about what people are likely to search in Google for when searching for your type of products or services. To make sure you don’t go wrong with this crucial first step here are 3 steps to help you.
1) Utilise the Google’s Keyword Tool (Website Promotion Secret)
This is the most important aspect to guarantee your new site will receive traffic, if you are building a website with keywords that nobody searches for then your site will fail, so its vital that the keywords you select currently receive search traffic in Google’s keyword tool. If your keywords receive 100’s or perhaps 1000’s of searches then that is brilliant, however sometime too many searches could be a bad thing as there already bee stiff competition out there for the best keywords. So be selective and determine what will suit you best. It is also important that when you perform your search you use the “phrase match” setting, this ensures you are only looking at the exact keyword and not a broad term.
2) How many websites currently compete for your selected keywords?
Next we do a little bit more research in to the keywords that you are interested in. It is important to find out how many websites currently are competing on the keywords. To do this go to Google and type in your keywords ensuring that they are hyphenated and you can quickly tell how many sites Google come back within the results.
What amount of competing pages return?
Depending upon the amount of competing pages will determine whether to go for it or to pass. If there are millions of pages then it might be better to pass unless you have plenty of money backing you up, if there are say 30,000 then maybe this is the keyword to go for, just judge it upon what you feel comfortable with.
3) What is the competition on the first page for your keyword?
Prior to selecting your final keywords, check through the top 10 competing websites, if it becomes obvious you are competing against difficult competition you may want to change your keywords, but usually with the right kind of white hat SEO you will be able to rank on Page #1 for most keywords.
Things to check for on competing websites: -
- How many backlinks do they have?
- How aged is the site?
- Are they massive authority sites or simple blogs etc…
Do a search on Google for backlink checkers, there are plenty of them.
The final check is to see what Google pagerank each of your competitors has, the higher the Pagerank especially 5 or more and they will be tough to overturn.
